EG4 3,000W All-In-One Inverter Review: Beginner-Friendly Solution or Waste of Money?

Today, we're reviewing one of the more popular power inverters on the market today - the EG4 3,000W All-In-One Off-Grid Inverter. Also known as the EG4 3000 48V or EG4 3kW Inverter, it’s a unit we’ve had plenty of requests to review.

While the name may sound a little clunky, the unit itself is actually really beginner-friendly, also offering fantastic features and incredible value. But, does the inverter actually deserve its rapid rise in popularity and solid reputation within the solar industry? 

To get to the bottom of this, we're going to explore the specifications, the installation process, and what we like and dislike about it. We’ll also run it through a few of our own performance tests to help you determine if this inverter is worth your hard-earned cash. Let’s dive in!

Key Features and Specifications 

Before we dive into our performance tests and overall impression of the EG4, let’s take a look at some of the features and specs that have made it such a popular unit:

• Lightweight Design: Not only is it compact; it weighs just 19 pounds! This is really helpful when it comes to installation, especially for those who might struggle with heavier equipment. 

• Stackable Single Phase 120V Design: While it's a single-phase unit, you can pair two inverters to achieve 240V and stack up to 12 units for a total output of 36kW!

• High Efficiency Rating: Rated at 94% efficiency with a 3,000W pure sine wave output. 

• Impressive Solar Input Rating: The inverter supports up to 5,000W of solar input, with a working voltage range of 120 to 500 volts, making it versatile and easy to set up without needing complex equipment. 

• Simple AC Input and Outputs: It boasts an 80-amp AC input, a clean and easy-to-read screen, and various ports for generator, solar, AC, and battery connections. 

Installation and Setting it Up 

One of the things we like the most about the EG4 3,000W inverter is just how straightforward the installation process is. With some of its competitors, like the more budget-friendly Rich Solar 3kW Inverter, installation can be really finicky. 

Step 1 – Mounting the Unit: 

Use the two screw mounts on top and one underneath to secure it to the wall. It’s really light and easy to hold, so this is actually a fairly simple process. 

Step 2 – Making the Connections: 

Connect the battery cables, AC input, and solar input. The unit comes with pre-crimped wires, making the process easier. The included instruction manual makes this fairly straightforward, so read through it before you start with the guesswork. 

Step 3 – Adjusting the Settings: 

Start by turning the inverter on by holding the enter button for a few seconds. From there, select your battery type using the display menu. For EG4 lithium batteries, use the lithium setting and connect the communication port for proper monitoring. 

Our Performance Tests 

Idle Consumption: During our initial tests, the inverter consumed about 64 watts on idle mode, which is higher than expected but nothing too crazy.

Load Test: It handled over 3,000 watts for 15-20 minutes without any issues, which demonstrated to us that it actually meets EG4’s capacity rating. Another good sign. 

Surge Capacity: When we pushed it, the EG4 was able to sustain surges for about 10 seconds without any noticeable problems, which is what we were hoping for.

Pass-Through Capabilities: One of the best things about this inverter is the fact that it supports pass-through power from solar or utility sources, even when batteries are depleted. When we tested it, it worked as advertised, another huge plus. 

Our Overall Impression of the EG4 3,000W All-In-One Inverter: Pros & Cons 

The Pros: 

• High Solar Input: The 5,000W solar input and wide voltage range is huge. Not only does this mean the unit is a solar workhorse, it simplifies things during setup and maximizes efficiency.

• It’s Really Beginner-Friendly: The clean design, simplified installation process, and straightforward controls make it ideal for newcomers to solar power, as well as anyone who just isn’t that tech-savvy.

• Effective Air Filters: We really like that EG4 decided to outfit the unit with built-in air filters, which should help to keep dust and debris out. Theoretically, the air filters should extend the unit's lifespan, making it a good long-term investment. It also makes it a more practical inverter for those running a solar setup in a garage, basement, or workshop. 

The Cons:

• Noise Levels: Noise is always a major concern whenever we review any type of indoor solar equipment. Unfortunately, the same built-in air filters that help to prevent damage due to dust and debris exposure also make it fairly noisy. Sure, the inverter is not the quietest out there, but don’t get us wrong, the noise isn’t enough to put us off it.

• Lack of Comprehensive Instructions: While individual components come with manuals, and we do recommend reading them, we would have preferred one straightforward, yet detailed guide for fully assembling the kit. This is a weird decision on EG4’s behalf. 

• App Quality: The accompanying smart ESS app is just plain mediocre. For an otherwise beginner-friendly piece of equipment, it’s surprising how difficult it is to monitor and control the inverter from a smartphone or tablet. 

Our Final Thoughts: Should You Buy the EG4 3,000W Inverter? 

Overall, we think that the EG4 3,000W All-In-One Inverter is a really solid option for those looking for a solid, well-built inverter that is really easy to install and use. 

Its high efficiency rating, simplified setup process, and beginner-friendly design outweigh the minor drawbacks we found. While the app could use improvement, and it might be a bit irritating if you’re particularly noise sensitive, the overall performance and value make a really strong case for this inverter.
